Certain HPV Viruses May Increase Risk Of Common Skin Cancers.

Wart causing viruses may increase your risk of getting common skin cancers, especially if you are taking steroid medications, or other immuno suppressive medications noted Dr. Rosio Indeed, previous research has "linked some of these HPVs to skin cancer, especially in transplant patients on immune-suppressing therapy and in people with a genetic disease that suppresses immune responses." Now, Dartmouth researchers "have taken these studies a step further" by looking for "antibodies to 16 different skin HPV types in both cancer cases and non-cancer cases."

Specifically, they "compared HPV antibody levels in 663 adults with squamous cell carcinoma, 898 people with basal cell carcinoma (the most common type of skin cancer) and 805 healthy controls," HealthDay (7/8, DeNoon) reported. "Testing positive for two or three types of HPV conferred a 44 percent higher risk for squamous cell carcinoma, the team reported, while having four to eight types conferred a 51 percent higher risk, and having more than eight types boosted the odds by 71 percent." According to the paper in BMJ, "people who had taken immunosuppressant drugs for a long time had triple the risk."The bottom line is that warts are common, and one should proceed to a dermatologist for diagnosis and effective treatment. There are many reasons including spread and possible infection and scarring for treatment. This correlation that I have long known is now further proven by this research and is not a cause for alarm about the common wart. But it is a wakeup call to see your dermatologist and have effective diagnosis and treatment for new growths, and not to ignore the common wart.
