MedWire (5/7, Piper) reported that, according to a study published in the journal Dermatology, "patients with psoriasis are at increased risk for hepatitis C." After comparing "the prevalence of viral hepatitis in 12,502 patients with psoriasis older than 20 years of age and 24,287 individuals without the condition matched for age and gender," researchers found that "in multivariate analysis, patients with psoriasis were 86% more likely to have hepatitis C than individuals without the skin condition." Dr. Rosio points out that this is critical because Hepatitis C is the “silent hepatitis”, more commonly manifesting no symptoms for many years while liver damage slowly progresses. Eventually, major damage may be done and even liver cancer may result. Much of this can now be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment of the viral infection.
