Nonphysician practice of medicine found at more "medi-spas" without the "MD"

The national problem of nonphysician practice of medicine is being uncovered at more so-called "medi-spas" and laser centers. The Des Moines Register (2/16, Leys) reported that, according to the Iowa Board of Medicine, Michigan-based American Laser Centers at one West Des Moines location "has allowed untrained people to run lasers to remove cellulite or dark skin patches." The Board of Medicine has also "sanctioned a retired general-practice doctor for letting the company list him as 'medical director,' even though he had few qualifications and provided little supervision." The Board of Medicine "says at least one patient suffered serious burns during skin-care treatment by clinic employees."
