MedWire (4/16, Albert) reported that, according to a study published in the March issue of the Archives of Dermatology, "melanoma survivors have a nine-fold increased risk for developing subsequent melanoma compared with the general population." After nine years of follow-up on 89,515 patients with primary cutaneous malignant melanoma, researchers "found that 10,857 (12.1%) of the participants developed one or more subsequent primary cancers," most often "subsequent primary melanoma, which accounted for 25% of the subsequent cancers recorded," a risk that remained higher even after 20 years. Dr. Tim Rosio says that this new research emphasizes the importance of at least annual dermatology examination of your skin, and learning self-exam by a dermatologist.
May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Dr. Tim Rosio will be performing complementary skin cancer screenings of sun exposed body areas throughout the season, with the kick-off being Saturday May 8th at the El Dorado Hills Town Center, tied in with the Art & Wine Affair. The Theme is "The Art of Beautiful Healthy Skin Your Life Your Skin Screenings. Education will be provided. Sunscreen samples and take-home education on self-exams will be available. Dr. Rosio cautions that sun exposure from your childhood is still with your skin today, and will be the rest of your life. Treat your skin like it is the only car you'll ever own. Take care of it, bring it in for your annual check-up, and let me know immediately if you notice any unusual signs. It will get you where you need to go and you'll enjoy being seen in it!
