Dermatologic Surgeon Shares Laser, Nose and Ear Reconstruction Findings
American Academy of Dermatology, Washington, D.C.: 3/2-7, 2001

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.)---Help your patients look and feel their best with the healthiest most attractive skin possible and avoid scars entirely, or make them far less visible. This is the message Dermatologic Surgeon Dr. Timothy Rosio will be sharing along with his pioneering laser and surgical techniques for preventing skin cancer, and reconstruction of the nose and ear after skin cancer surgery at the American Academy of Dermatology conference in Washington, D.C. Since one out of every five Americans will develop a skin cancer (much higher in fair skinned sun belt population) and need a surgical treatment, you or someone close to you will likely be affected. You can reduce visible scarring, achieve or maintain younger looking skin and reduce your risk of the most common malignancy--skin cancer. "From 'boomers' to mature seniors, that's attainable with a few tips on prevention and detection, and the newest treatments from healthful and cosmetic dermatology," according to Timothy J. Rosio, M.D., director of AnewSKIN Dermatology, serving northern California and the Sacramento region.

"During my use of the CO2 laser over the last 15 years to eliminate and improve visible scars I developed techniques which I realized were drastically reducing skin cancer risk by up to one-thousand per cent. Many of my patients who had been experiencing two to five new skin cancers every year were cancer free for more than five years after the treatment." Rosio will also be sharing techniques he finds useful in repairing nose and ear defects from skin cancers, birth defects, or injuries, to achieve a normal appearance. Many of Rosio's techniques have recently been published in several medical textbooks worldwide.

While it is ideal to prevent skin cancer, Rosio stresses that he recommends a Dermatologist's thorough exam and treatment of any existing skin cancer before any laser treatment. "Recently some non-dermatologists have begun to practice laser treatment to reduce wrinkles and sun damage. However studies show they are less trained and unable to diagnose early skin cancers as successfully as Dermatologists. This could delay proper treatment and lead to adverse effects. Diagnose first, treatment second", Rosio emphasized.

State of the Art Treatments from Laser and Dermatologic Surgery

Rosio guides the beam of laser light vaporizing one skin layer at a time, removing genetically damaged cells before they can progress to skin cancer, and recontouring scars and surrounding skin. Depending on the degree of damage and the treatment, age spots are removed, loose wrinkled skin is tightened up, and smoother, more youthful appearing attractive skin develops, with an appreciably reduced lifetime risk of future skin cancers."

Sun Damage Detection and Risk Factors

A quick self check called a 'skin scan' at home once a week, or at least once a month is easy to do while disrobed with a full length mirror and a hand mirror. Common signs of cancer precursors and early skin cancers are small bumps that may be waxy, or reddish-brown in color, or a flat red spot which becomes scaly, rough and irritated. If you notice an unusual growth or a sore that breaks down and doesn't heal, or sporadically breaks open again---see your physician, a dermatologist if available to you. A quick skin scan can reassure you that all is well, or alert you to watch any mildly questionable spots that concern you or your doctor.

A personal or family history of skin cancer should be brought to your dermatologist's attention. Characteristics such as blonde or red hair, fair skin, freckling, poor tanning ability, blue eyes are more susceptible to sun damage; and sun exposure which is intense and intermittent or milder frequent doses without protection raise your risk.

An increased number of moles (more than 25) or unusual type of mole may be a sign of a higher lifetime risk of melanoma. This is the most serious kind of skin cancer and is curable with early detection and treatment in most cases. The ABCDE's are a set of common and abnormal signs seen in moles using the letters A through E (modified by Dr. Rosio) to recall the descriptive changes.

Protect Your Investment in Health and Appearance

First reduce exposures to the most intense sunlight occurring between 10:00am and 3:00pm. Second, use broad brimmed hats, sunglasses, clothing, and generously applied sunscreen with a protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher, and reapplied within two hours, or sooner if sweating or swimming. Newer sunscreens have broader protection for ultraviolet rays, and some for damaging infrared rays. Many of these are much more water resistant. Note cloudy days, thin wet clothing, being in the water, and tanning do not protect your skin from damage.

Remember these tips on prevention, detection, and the newest treatments for a healthy attractive skin from dermatology. You'll reduce your family's skin cancer risk and improve your appearance for a lifetime.
