Dermatologists help educate the public on how to keep their skin healthy at any age during National Healthy Skin Month
Sacramento, California, November 3rd, 2008 – Millions of Americans suffer from conditions affecting their skin, hair and nails. Some of these conditions can impact their quality of life and even be life threatening. November is National Healthy Skin Month and dermatologists are reaching out in their communities to help educate the public about these conditions and how to keep their skin, hair and nails healthy.
"Your skin protects your other organs, warms you up and cools you down, and reflects how healthy you are inside," said Dr. Tim Rosio, M.D. "Every day, around the clock, your skin works to protect your body, so it is important to protect your skin."
As the physician experts in the medical care of your skin, dermatologists are uniquely trained to analyze your skin, spot potential problems, and diagnose and treat a multitude of conditions. For example, dermatologists can improve the lives of patients of all ages – the infant with a red birthmark, the child with eczema, the baby boomer with sun-damaged skin, the senior citizen with shingles – effectively treating their skin conditions and making them look and feel their best.
Advances in Medical Treatments.
Advances in medicine and technology now provide patients with treatment options to help manage even the most serious of skin conditions. "Dermatologists are using the latest science to treat skin cancer and other skin conditions, saving lives and improving the quality of patient's lives," said Dr. Rosio. "Common skin disorders, such as acne and psoriasis, were once difficult to treat but can now be successfully controlled."
Providing Surgical Solutions
Patients also can benefit from new surgical solutions to treat skin conditions such as skin cancer and varicose veins. "All dermatologists are trained in surgical procedures, but some choose to specialize in surgery, using leading-edge techniques often invented and perfected by fellow dermatologists," said Dr. Rosio. "For example, I and some other dermatologists have have taken the lead in the use of Mohs surgery to remove the most common types of skin cancer and pioneered the use of lasers for the treatment of conditions such as birthmarks, blood vessels and scars."
Advances in Cosmetic Treatments
Dermatologists can improve the health and appearance of the skin with a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatments including filling in or smoothing out wrinkles, eliminating skin discolorations, resurfacing skin with microdermabrasion or chemical peels, and removing or replacing hair. "Advances in the use of fillers, lasers and skin rejuvenation are allowing dermatologists to offer customized treatments for each patient’s specific cosmetic needs," said Dr. Rosio.
Preventing Future Problems
Dermatologists also are a great resource for learning how to prevent skin, hair and nail concerns. "Patients can learn how to protect themselves from the sun to reduce their risk of skin cancer, learn about proper hair care to avoid hairstyles that can contribute to hair loss, and get advice on how to care for their nails to prevent common conditions such as nail fungus," said Dr. Rosio. "Whatever your concerns may be, a dermatologist can be your trusted partner in maintaining the health of your skin, hair and nails."
