FDA approves first non-surgical treatment for Dupuytren's contracture.

Bloomberg News (2/3, Olmos) reports that the FDA approved Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s "Xiaflex, an injectable drug that treats the abnormal build-up of collagen in the palm of the hand affecting patients with Dupuytren's" contracture. Currently, Dupuytren's is most commonly treated with surgery, which "works for a majority of patients," but involved "months of recuperation and physical therapy." Bob Rappaport, director of the Division of Anesthesiology, Analgesia, and Rheumatology of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement, "Since there are no other non-surgical alternatives for Dupuytren's contracture, Xiaflex will be an important advance in the management of this disabling condition."

The Los Angeles Times (2/2, Maugh) "Booster Shoots" blog reported that the most common side effects include "fluid buildup, swelling, bleeding and pain in the injected area." An allergic reaction could also be possible. The Wall Street Journal (2/3, Dooren) reports that Auxilium plans to follow the patients from the clinical studies conducted to get approval for the drug for up to five years, in order to collect data on the drug's long-term safety and effectiveness.
