Childhood Sunburn May Lead To Malignant Melanoma.
Dr. Rosio suggests we all consider the story of physician Val Coupes, who now "has just months to live after a malignant melanoma was triggered by a single episode of childhood sunburn" that happened at age seven during a family vacation. Now, 27 years later, "the 34-year-old consultant pediatrician has terminal cancer," having developed a melanoma "in the same place on her back where she'd suffered sunburn on that holiday. She now has at least ten tumors in her liver, lungs and lymph nodes." Dr. Rosio points out, "Sunburn is a sign of DNA damage -- some experts believe that just one episode of blistering sunburn before the age of 20 can double the risk of developing malignant melanoma."
