AAD's Suntelligence Survey Highlights Significant Differences In Skin Cancer Knowledge, Practices.
The Wall Street Journal reported that residents of Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland rank at the very bottom of the American Academy of Dermatology's "Suntelligence: How Sun Smart Is Your City?" survey, while denizens of Salt Lake City, Hartford (CT), and Denver rank at the top.
"The poll examined more than 7,000 adults in 26 cities questioning them about their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about skin cancer detection, sun protection, and tanning," WebMD (5/3, Broder) reported. In each of the 26 cities, some 200 participants took part in the survey, while "an additional 1,123 people completed surveys outside of the study cities, which were used for the national comparison." Notably, "residents of the highest- and lowest-ranked cities showed significant differences in skin cancer knowledge and practices when compared to the average collective responses for all surveys."
According to MedPage Today (5/3, Petrochko), "eight out of 10 respondents to the online survey...expressed concern and 75% said they would do anything to prevent skin cancer," but "72% said a tan makes people look more attractive, 66% said it makes people look healthier, and 60% agreed that sun exposure is good for you." Disturbingly, "28% said they never check moles and other skin blemishes for changes, 59% have never been checked for skin cancer by a healthcare professional, and 70% do not apply sunblock on an average day."
